Why do you volunteer?

37 years in Calgary have been very good to me, my career and my family. Since retiring 4 years ago I find that volunteering is the best way to give back.

Why do you volunteer with the YMCA specifically?

I remember when my son, Chad would come home from YMCA summer programs and could barely hold his enthusiasm as he informed me of the wonderful things he did during the day. He is 31 years now, married and two sons of his own who will soon enjoy some of those same experiences. I can’t think of a better place  to give back to.

What is your favorite thing about volunteering?

My time is spent on the climbing wall. What I like most is when young kids come in with no experience. After several climb attempts, each time venturing higher and each time developing more and more confidence I see their facial expression go from a frown of anxiety to a great smile of conquest.

What is your YMCA story? What brought you here?

At first it was a desire and passion for fitness. After spending some time at the Y, getting to know and making lasting friendships with the staff and members there is no desire to go elsewhere. The atmosphere within the facility and knowledge of its priorities and focus, specifically Kids, makes being a member and volunteer at the Y an easy decision.
